Connection and community

Strongly evidenced, and easy to postpone.

Of everything on our list, this has among the strongest research behind it and receives the least attention, because there is nothing to buy and no way to start on a Monday. This page sets out what the studies have found, what they cannot claim, and what actually seems to work when someone wants more connection and does not have it.

Written for anyone whose calendar has quietly emptied over a few years without a single decision ever being made about it.

Nobody chooses to stop seeing people. A job changes, a group disbands, a few invitations get declined, and a year later the calendar is simply emptier.

01 · The problem

Nothing advertises it, so nothing reminds you.

Nothing in the wellness market reminds you about this, because there is no margin in it. Connection cannot be bottled, subscribed to or delivered, so it does not advertise, and a category that learns about health through advertising will systematically under-weight it.

It also erodes without any single decision being made. Nobody chooses to stop seeing people. A job changes, a group disbands, a friend moves, a few invitations get declined during a busy stretch, and a year later the calendar is simply emptier. That gradualness is what makes it easy to postpone and hard to notice, and it is why we have put it on the list rather than assuming everyone has it covered.

Who is writing this

We under-weighted this for years.

We put this on the list precisely because nothing advertises it. A category that learns about health through advertising will always under-weight the thing nobody can sell, and we did exactly that for years.

We are not doctors and we do not pretend to be. What we can do is separate what has been observed in populations from what has been shown to cause anything, say how large and how long the studies were, and tell you plainly where the evidence stops.

How this works

Discover. Understand. Explore. Choose.

The same four steps on every page of this site, in that order. You are somewhere in the middle of them right now.

01

Discover

Find out the question is more interesting than you were told.

02

Understand

See what the evidence supports, and where it runs out.

03

Explore

Ask the person who sent you here to walk you through it.

04

Choose

Decide for yourself, with no pressure and no deadline.

02 · Why it matters

Lonely and isolated are not the same word.

Loneliness and social isolation are not the same thing, and the distinction matters. Isolation is how much contact you have. Loneliness is the gap between the contact you have and the contact you want. People can be isolated and content, and they can be surrounded and lonely, which is why counting social events is a poor measure of anything.

This item also props up the rest of the list in a way that is easy to miss. Most people who exercise regularly are meeting someone. Most people who eat well are cooking for somebody. Community is frequently the delivery mechanism for the other seven, rather than a separate item sitting alongside them.

03 · What the evidence says

Three claims, three very different standards of proof.

Established

Connection tracks with long-term health

Reviews pooling many studies have repeatedly found that stronger social relationships are associated with better survival and better long-term health, with effect sizes large enough that public health bodies now treat isolation as a population-level risk rather than a personal misfortune. It is one of the most consistent findings in this whole field.

Mixed

Whether loneliness can be treated directly

Knowing that connection matters is not the same as knowing how to create it. Trials of befriending schemes, group activities and social prescribing have produced genuinely mixed results, and approaches that address how someone thinks about social situations have often done better than approaches that simply add more contact. Online connection appears to help when it supports relationships and to help much less when it replaces them.

Often overstated

Community as a word for a customer list

Belonging is now sold, and the word community gets attached to audiences, subscriber bases and downlines. A group you are in because you bought something, and would leave if you stopped, is a customer relationship. It may be perfectly pleasant. It is not what the research on social connection is measuring, and treating it as though it were is a claim nobody should be making.

This is an area of active research. Some of the studies referenced here are early, small, or conducted in laboratory or animal models rather than in people. We have said so wherever that is the case.

04 · The options

Three routes, none of which require you to be an outgoing person. The common thread is that they remove the need to arrange anything, which is the part that quietly defeats most people.

Regular beats spontaneous

Something that repeats at the same time without anyone organising it. A Tuesday class, a Saturday game, a standing walk. Friendship is largely produced by repeated unplanned contact, and a fixture manufactures that, whereas keeping in touch relies on somebody having the energy to initiate.

What it will not do: work if you attend only when you feel like it.

Do something alongside people

A shared task carries a conversation, and it removes the pressure of having to produce one. Choirs, allotments, repair sheds, volunteering, sport, cooking. For anyone who finds the idea of meeting people to talk exhausting, this is the version that works, and it is also the version that survives a bad mood.

What it will not do: produce closeness quickly. It takes months.

The small ones count

The people you recognise but do not know well, at the shop, the pool, the bus stop, contribute more to how connected a day feels than most people credit. They are also the easiest to rebuild, because they ask almost nothing of you and require no arrangement at all.

What it will not do: replace one or two people who really know you.

05 · The limits

What advice cannot reach.

Loneliness is not a character flaw and it is not evidence that you have done something wrong. It is extremely common, it moves in and out of people's lives, and the people it affects most are frequently the ones with the least room to do anything about it.

Some isolation is caused by circumstances that advice cannot reach. Caring for someone around the clock, a disability that makes leaving the house difficult, bereavement, a language barrier, poverty, illness. Suggesting a choir to somebody in that position is not help. If that is where you are, the more useful conversation is with your doctor or a local support organisation, both of which can point at practical things a website cannot.

If loneliness comes with low mood that persists, please speak to a doctor, because the two travel together and the second one is treatable. Nothing described on this page treats, prevents or cures any condition.

What is at stake

It erodes without a decision being made.

If you understand it

You treat it as a health input rather than a nice extra, you notice the drift early, and you can tell the difference between a community and a customer list.

If you do not

One of the best evidenced things in population health keeps being postponed, because it never asks for your attention and nothing in the market reminds you.
